Former information minister imprisoned for 15 days

The Public Funds Prosecution on Friday decided to detain former information minister Anas al-Fiqqi for 15 days pending investigation into allegations of squandering public money and profiteering.

Fiqqi faces charges of squandering an estimated LE88 million of state funds by approving the broadcast of several satellite sports channels at rates lower than those stipulated by law.

Fiqqi, who is also facing seven other charges, denied the accusation, saying granting the right to broadcast is the authority of a certain committee.

Meanwhile, judicial sources told Al-Masry Al-Youm that investigations have shown that Gamal Mubarak, former parliamentary speaker Fathi Sorour and 11 others were not involved in granting permits to travel agencies in violation of the law.
