Former minister pays thousands to Al-Akhbar to reconcile with state

Former Information Minister Anas al-Fiqqi has paid LE60,000 to the state-run Al-Akhbar Al-Youm Institution for Journalism as repyament for illegal gifts he received while in office, Fiqqi's lawyer said on Thursday.

The prosecutor general questioned Fiqqi about the gifts on Wednesday. The ex-minister testified that Al-Akhbar gave him LE100,000 in luxury items over a three-year period.

Fiqqi is one among several Mubarak-regime figures asked to pay back millions of pounds as compensation for illegal gifts paid to them by state news organizations before the revolution.

He is currently serving a jail sentence in Maadi's Tora Prison after being found guilty of corruption charges.
