Former Shura Council speaker imprisoned for 15 days

The head of Egypt's Illicit Gains Authority (IGA) on Monday ordered the imprisonment of a former Shura Council speaker, according to a judicial source.

Ahmed Tolba, head of the IGA's investigations department, ordered Safwat al-Sherif, who is also the former National Democratic Party (NDP) secretary, to 15 days of prison, the source said.

Al-Sherif faces allegations of amassing wealth through illegal means and abusing power during the rule of former President Hosni Mubarak.

Although rumored to have fled to London, al-Sherif arrived in his own car, the source said. His bodyguards tried to hinder the media from photographing him before he entered IGA offices.

The head of the IGA had ordered al-Sherif's assets to be frozen on 4 April and banned him from travel.

Al-Sherif was one of the pillars of Mubarak's ousted regime. The former intelligence officer served as secretary general for the NDP from 2002 until his dismissal during the 25 January revolution. Al-Sherif was close to Mubarak and also served as information minister.
