Egypt’s armed forces on Thursday arrested four activists calling for people to take part in protests scheduled for 27 May.
In a statement, the April 6 Youth Movement said forces affiliated with the military arrested Ibrahim Abed in Nasr City, northeast of Cairo. He is currently being held in a military area and will face questioning by the military prosecution.
Activist Mona Seif said the armed forces arrested an additional three activists who were hanging posters downtown calling for an end to trying civilians in military tribunals.
Seif told Al-Masry Al-Youm that the armed forces transferred graffiti artist Mohamed Fahmy (also known as Ganzeer), film director Aida al-Kashef and musician Abdel Rahman Amin to a facility in Cairo.
Mohamed Adel, the movement’s spokesperson, said that the move recalls security procedures adopted by deposed President Hosni Mubarak during his rule.
Adel added that the decision to put activists put on trial for distributing fliers is a dangerous indicator of future violations. He called on the military to release Abed immediately.
