Four people were killed and one person was severely injured in a car accident in Sohag on Tuesday.
Security sources said the accident took place when a truck hit two motor bikes carrying five people on the agricultural road to a village in Balyana City.
The victims were transferred to Balyana Central Hospital, while the truck driver was apprehended and local prosecutors started investigations.
A total of 1,999 accidents occurred on main roads and highways in Egypt last year, causing the deaths of 980 people and injuring 4,392, according to a report released Monday by the General Authority for Roads, Bridges and Land Transport.
Road and rail accidents in recent years have sparked a public outcry over the government’s record on transportation safety. Many road crashes in Egypt are caused by reckless driving, lax traffic rules and bad road conditions.
