Gaza’s devastated largest city appealed for international support to help restore basic services after the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas came into force following more than 15 months of war.

More than 70 percent of roads in Gaza City have been destroyed and 60 percent of residents have no water supply, the local government said Monday.

“The priorities of the first phase are to restore life to the city, secure services, and reopen the streets,” the Gaza City municipality said.

The local government said it had submitted a list of needs to international organizations and called for “ample” quantities of fuel to be allowed in.

Reconstruction across Gaza will be an enormous and lengthy undertaking.

About 92 percent of homes in Gaza have been destroyed or damaged, and more than 1.8 million people are in urgent need of emergency shelter and essential household items, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs estimated in a recent report.
