Gazzar sworn in as new housing minister, replacing Madbouli

Egypt’s new Minister of Housing Assem al-Gazzar gave the oath of office before President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi on Wednesday, presidency spokesperson Bassam Radi said.

Gazzar replaces former Housing Minister Mustafa Madbouli, who became the prime minister in June 2018 and had been serving in both positions until Gazzar’s appointment.

Gazzar had been appointed as the deputy housing minister on January 14.

He also served as chairman of the General Organization of Physical Planning under the Ministry of Housing.

Egypt swore in a new cabinet headed by Madbouli in June 2018, replacing key ministers, including finance, defense and interior, in a major reshuffle after President Sisi won a second term in office.

The new cabinet marks the broadest shake-up in Egypt’s government since Sisi first took office in 2014, as the Western-allied nation grapples with an Islamist insurgency and tries to put the economy back on track after years of turbulence since the 2011 protests that toppled veteran leader Hosni Mubarak.
