German ambassador does not see evidence of “Brotherhood terrorism”

Germany’s ambassador to Cairo has said his country does not see an evidence of the terrorism the Egyptian government has blamed the Muslim Brotherhood for since the ouster of the group’s government in 2013.

In a press conference on Monday held in preparation for Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi’s visit to Germany next month, Hansjorg Haber said the Egyptian government has failed to provide convincing evidence to the Brotherhood’s involvement in terrorist attacks.

His comments come a few days after Egypt’s judiciary sentenced Morsi and several other Brotherhood leaders to death over charges related to their escape from prison in 2011.

The sentence drew criticism from the United Nations, the United States and several human rights NGOs.

Egypt has jailed and tried thousands of Muslim Brotherhood leaders and backers over multiple charges since Morsi's removal.

The government has branded the Brotherhood a terrorist organization and accuses it of orchestrating a wave of bombings and attacks on army and police throughout the republic.
