Giza Governor Ali Abdel Rahman has halted licensing for mobile phone stations near schools and hospitals after several parents and educators complained about towers being built in the Haram area.
Licenses for new stations will now have to be approved by the health and environment ministries. Abdel Rahman said local officials should abide by any requirements stated by the two ministries.
The governorate will review agreements and protocols signed with phone companies, said Abdel Rahman, adding that he does not intend to amend the protocols provided the ministries' requirements are being met and no one's health is at risk.
The governor said he would not approve any new projects that could harm citizens, describing their health as a "red line."
