The Egyptian government is considering the establishment of a radio and television authority to replace the Information Ministry, which has been without a minister since the formation of Prime Minister Essam Sharaf’s cabinet in March.
Ahmed al-Samman, media advisor to the prime minister, said the cabinet is considering the abolition of the Ministry of Information as a demonstration of support for the 25 January revolution.
In a statement on Monday, Samman said Media Production City and the General Authority for Information will continue to be controlled by the Radio and Television Union for the time being.
Egyptian media personalities have called for the establishment of an independent body modeled on the British Broadcasting Corporation. The body would be made up of media professionals and be responsible for policy-making in Egyptian media.
