Governor: cross-border trade with Libya returns partially soon

Matrouh Governor Alaa Abu Zeid said Friday that the movement of commercial trucks from Egypt to Libya would return partially next week.

The minister said in a statement that the semi trucks will not, however, be allowed to go into Libyan soil beyond the Emsaed land crossing, where they will unload their cargo.

An exception will be made for cargo containing fruits and vegetables which will be able to go further to Tobruk where refrigerators are available.

Drivers will be provided with safeguard cards, the governor added.

Egyptian drivers crossing into Libya for trade have been victims to hostage situations perpetrated by Islamist militias and tribal groups over the years that followed the ouster of late leader Muammar al-Qadhafi in 2011.
