Govt may force restaurants to save energy by closing early

The country's Board of Governors plans to force stores to close at 10 pm and restaurants and cafes to close at midnight to conserve energy, Local Development Minister Ahmed Zaki Abdeen announced Thursday.

The board did not set closing times for tourist attractions.

There is a proposal to implement the closing times following Eid al-Adha at the end of the month, the minister said without specifying how the plan would be approved or enforced.

The country has been experiencing frequent electricity cuts due to power shortages.

Cairo is known as a city that does not sleep because many stores are open late and restaurants and cafes operate around the clock and the decision, if implemented, would likely prompt an outcry from business owners.
