Hamas and Fatah to meet in Cairo regarding reconciliation

On Sunday Fatah and Hamas will conduct negotiations in Cairo regarding the implementation of the reconciliation agreement they signed in Cairo in May.

Diplomatic sources told Al-Masry Al-Youm that the meeting will not tackle who should be the new prime minister, an issue which has caused deep disagreements between the two movements.

Fatah insists that current Prime Minister Salam Fayyad continue to lead the new government, but Hamas rejects this.

Fatah's delegation is led by Azzam al-Ahmed, the member of the movement's central committee, while Hamas' delegation is led by the deputy chairman of the movement’s Political Bureau, Moussa Abu Marzouq.

Members from the two delegations held consultations on Saturday in the presence of Egyptian intelligence officials.

Sakhr Bseiso, a member of Fatah's central committee, told reporters that reconciliation should not stop because of disagreements over one point.

He added that the talks will, among other things, tackle the issue of detainees, and efforts to unify security bodies in Gaza and the West Bank.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and the head of the political bureau of Hamas Khaled Mashaal were scheduled to meet in Cairo in June, but their meeting was indefinitely postponed for no clear reason.
