Hamas neither disrupts Egypt's security nor interferes in its domestic affairs under any circumstances, said a member of the group’s political bureau, Mahmoud al-Zahar, adding that it is “unimaginable” to hear such accusations now.
Speaking in an interview with satellite channel al-Arabiya late Monday, Zahar said several accusations have been made against the group that have all been proven false. “Attempts to slander the resistance always fail,” he said.
Relations have become stronger between Hamas and the ruling regime in Egypt following the election of President Mohamed Morsy, a former member of the Muslim Brotherhood, Egypt’s strongest political group with which Hamas is affiliated.
“Egyptians have to know the full truth about the assault on Judges Club chief Ahmed al-Zend. There is a phenomenon in Egypt that when someone is arrested but not yet convicted we find fingers pointing with accusation at Hamas, which is unacceptable,” Zahar said.
Zend, who chairs Egypt’s Judges Club, was reportedly attacked with gunfire on Sunday while leading a protest against Prosecutor General Talaat Abdallah, who was appointed by Morsy. Some news reports said a Palestinian was among the suspects arrested over the assault.
Zahar noted that there are many Palestinians in Egypt belonging to various factions, adding that any faction facing accusation should bear the responsibility. He stressed that he does not accept that any Egyptian be assaulted by a Palestinian.
