Hamzawy released amid accusations of insulting judiciary

Political activist and former MP Amr Hamzawy has been released from custody pending investigations into accusations he insulted the judiciary via social media.

Hamzawy faced questioning after a complaint was filed by a lawyer who works at the law office of Wasat Party deputy, Essam Sultan. The complaint accused Hamzawy of insulting the judiciary in a post he made on Twitter.

Hamzawy denied the charges against him.

The former MP said he had posted the tweet on his personal account after the verdict in the foreign-funded non-governmental organizations (NGOs) case was announced.

It had no criminal intention, Hamzawy added, stressing he respected and admired Egypt's judiciary.
