Health Ministry: 46 injured in clashes between Morsy supporters and opponents in Suez

Dr. Reda Zaghloul, head of the emergency department of the Suez Health Directorate, said on Monday that 46 people were injured in clashes that broke out between supporters of ousted President Mohamed Morsy and his opponents.

Medical sources meanwhile told MENA that the total number of injured from the clashes has risen to 70, including 35 who were shot by firearms and birdshot.

Of the injured, four people suffered eye ruptures and were transferred to Zagazig hospital. Two people were shot in the arm and were referred to Hod el-Dars Hospital in Suez.

Clashes broke out between Morsy supporters and unknown men in Suez early on Monday when a pro-Morsy march headed to the Suez governorate headquarters after night prayers. The protesters chanted against Defense Minister Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and called for the return of Morsy to power.

Then the marchers headed to Arbaeen Square where unknown men fired live bulets and birdshot at them, prompting the marchers to turn to Madina Monawara Street where the clashes continued.

Egyptian governorates have experienced a wave of violence since Morsy’s ouster from power in the aftermath of mass protests that called for early presidential elections. Morsy’s supporters continue to stage sit-ins and demonstrations in several governorates to call for Morsy’s return.
