Health Ministry warns of ‘disaster’ in hospitals due to power outages

The Health Ministry has warned of a “disaster” in hospitals due to the recent rolling blackouts.

“We asked the Ministry of Electricity to supply the major hospitals from two different sources,” said Assistant Health Minister Abdel Hamid Abaza. “Only 60 percent of teaching hospitals have generators.”

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Electricity claimed the residents of Damietta are impeding a project linking the West Damietta power station to the national grid, which would increase its capacity by 500 megawatts.

In a statement Sunday, the ministry said a resident who was compensated by the ministry to build a tower on his land requested more money to allow the workers to install the cables.

In Giza, Fayoum and Kafr al-Zayat, residents staged protests of the rolling blackouts.
