Following the devastating earthquake that struck Morocco on Saturday, concern has spread that a similar quake could strike Egypt, leading the head of the National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics (NRIAG) Gad al-Qady to clarify the matter.
In a Saturday phone-in Sada al-Balad channel, Qady explained that the Moroccan earthquake occurred far from Egyptian territories, with its closest point to Egypt being 3,200 km away.
He assured that as the geological structures of the two countries share no connection, Egypt faces no threat.
Qady also touched on discussions over a Dutch expert relating earthquakes to astrology, explaining that this is far from the actual science used in earthquake detection and astronomy and is mere conjecture.
There is no scientific evidence of a relationship between celestial bodies and earthquakes, he stressed.
