Khaled Abdel Badie, chairman of the Gas Holding Company, said the electricity sector needs 150 million cubic meters of gas per day, which is a 30 percent increase compared to last year.
He said the company aims to provide the sector with 100 percent of its needs for the summer. “We must convert the liquefied gas into gas in order to do so, but the Egyptian ports are not equipped for this process,” he said. “It takes two years to equip the ports.”
General Petroleum Authority Vice President Amr Mostafa said there is no shortage of diesel and mazut supply for power plants, adding that the Petroleum Ministry has a diesel reserve for 10 days and a mazut reserve for 20 days.
“There are four ships now in Suez and Alexandria unloading 135,000 tons,” he said.
For its part, the Electricity Ministry said it has signed an agreement with China to build clean coal power plants and develop hydro plants.
