Independent press to form union

A number of publishers announced on Wednesday the establishment of the Egyptian Association of Publishers of Independent Newspapers.

Publishers said the association would help "defend the interests of the printed press industry, and to liberate it from all forms of monopoly and the set of legal restrictions on  freedoms of expression and publishing."

The announcement followed a series of meetings between representatives of several independent papers, including Sherif Abdel Wadoud, deputy board manager at Al-Masry Al-Youm, Ibrahim al-Maalem, CEO of Al-Shorouq, and Hazem Sherif, managing director and chief editor of Al-Mal.

A statement on the establishment of the association said it “conforms with the principles of the 25 January revolution, at the top of which is developing a new democratic system that provides the freedom to establish political parties, syndicates, and associations that represent different social categories."
