Interim President Adly Mansour granted awards on Wednesday to 256 fallen policemen for their roles in protecting the country “after they sacrificed their lives to achieve stability and preserve the security of the country and its citizens.”
The decision comes three days ahead of the third anniversary of 25 January revolution, which was in large part a reaction against the police's actions in 2011.
Police Day celebrations come amid criticism by Islamist groups, led by the Muslim Brotherhood, and revolutionary groups of police behavior against activists protesting the authorities that ousted toppled President Mohamed Morsy in 2013.
