The Interior Ministry cannot secure the trial of deposed President Hosni Mubarak and those of his sons if they are to be held in Cairo or other cities close to it, Interior Minister Mansour Essawy told Justice Minister Abdel Aziz al-Guindi, according to security sources.
Essawy predicted massive demonstrations during the trial, which the police would not be able to control.
The prosecution told Mubarak earlier this week that he has been referred to a criminal court on charges of inciting the killing of demonstrators, squandering public funds, taking bribes and profiteering from his position.
Mubarak, who is being held in Sharm el-Sheikh International Hospital, is said to have fainted when he heard the news, although doctors managed to wake him.
Sources said that the hospital bill for Mubarak’s wife was LE4100 and that his own bill was LE13,400, which the prisons authority would pick up.
Judicial sources said Mubarak could be tried by a court in Sharm al-Sheikh if his condition would not allow him to be moved to Cairo. They also said a special court could convene in the hospital.
Legal experts said Mubarak faces the death penalty or 15 years in prison on charges of killing demonstrators, and 3-15 years in prison on charges of seizing public funds.
