International crime gang trial postponed to October

The Heliopolis Misdemeanors Court has postponed to 24 October the trial of members of an international ring of thieves charged with stealing jewelry and electronics from local shops in Heliopolis and Nasr City.

The gang–which boasts members from Colombia, Venezuela and Mexico–allegedly stole merchandise in Egypt, later smuggling it into Israel via the border crossing at Taba.

The alleged thieves were brought into the court amid heavy security. When they saw reporters attempting to take pictures, several of them covered their faces.

Gang members chose Egypt due to the relative lack of surveillance cameras deployed on the streets of Cairo, investigations have revealed.

The thieves allegedly stole jewelery worth over LE1 million in total. They also allegedly managed to smuggle some LE3 million in cash across the border to Israel.
