US President Donald Trump rejected Iran’s response to Washington’s proposal for peace talks to end the war.
Trump wrote on his Truth Social account: “I have just read the response from Iran’s so-called “Representatives.” I don’t like it — TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE! Thank you for your attention to this matter.”
Iranian state media has previously reported that the response focused on ending the war on all fronts, particularly in Lebanon, and ensuring the safety of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, without specifying how or when the vital waterway would be reopened.
The semi-official Iranian news agency Tasnim reported that Tehran’s proposal included an immediate end to the war on all fronts, a lifting of the US naval blockade, guarantees against further attacks on Iran, and the lifting of sanctions, including the US embargo on oil sales.
The Wall Street Journal, citing unnamed sources, reported that Iran proposed reducing the concentration of some of its highly enriched uranium and transferring the remainder to a third country.
A Pakistani official said that Islamabad had conveyed Iran’s response to the US as part of its mediation efforts between the two sides.
With US President Donald Trump’s visit to China approaching this week, pressure is mounting to end the war that has ignited a global energy crisis and poses a growing threat to the world economy.
Iran has imposed a near-total blockade on shipping – except for vessels directly linked to it – through the Strait of Hormuz, which carried a fifth of the world’s oil supply before the war and has emerged as a key flashpoint in the conflict.
