Irrigation Minister warns against environmental impacts of the river basins

Water Resources and Irrigation Minister Hossam Moghazy has stressed necessity of approaching the environmental impacts of the river basins as well as avoiding damages resulted from the future development plans of some countries, which should put into consideration the downstream countries that are negatively affected by the these plan.

In press remarks after returning back from Kenya, at which the minister took part in conference on the environmental impacts of the river basins, organized by the United Nations Environment Program, Moghazy highlighted importance of not harming others as well as forming management for the basin that guarantees participation of all the riparian countries.

He stressed importance to preserve the water resources of international rivers so all countries could benefit.

Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia agreed in August on mechanisms for deciding on the possible negative effects of the Addis Ababa’s Grand Renaissance Dam which Cairo fears would affect its share of the water flow.

Ethiopia had frequently said that the dam, a project it announced nearly four years ago, would bring no harm to Egypt’s water security.
