Islamists call for ‘Friday of Islamic Identity’

Islamists on Thursday distributed leaflets calling for a “Million-strong Demonstration of Islamic Identity" this Friday. The fliers bore logos of Jama’a al-Islamiya, Salafi groups and the Muslim Brotherhood in Cairo and Giza.

Leaflets and tracts were also reportedly distributed in the Bulak al-Dakrur, Ard al-Lewa, and Imbaba areas.

The tracts denounced “American funding of liberal parties” and rejected the postponement of parliamentary elections and supra-constitutional documents.

They stressed that Egypt is “a civil state based on Islamic principles and not an American secular state.”

Al-Masry Al-Youm received a copy of a statement from an unidentified Islamist group that demanded all state institutions, including universities and labor unions, be purged of former National Democratic Party members. The statement also labeled those who demand a supra-constitutional document a secular minority funded by foreign bodies.

The statement referred to former US ambassador Margret Scobey, who said that US$65 million has been earmarked to support democratic development in Egypt following the ouster of former President Hosni Mubarak. The statement added that liberal and secular movements and parties have received these funds.

This statement, along other statements issued by Islamist groups, broke the agreement to unify demands and slogans for next Friday's protest. Political forces had agreed that they would denounce a military council statement accusing opposition forces of receiving foreign funds to destabilize the country.

Twenty-seven political parties and movements agreed to participate in Friday’s protest.
