Islamists consider protests against mixed electoral system

Islamist parties and movements have criticized the ruling military council for insisting on a system for the upcoming parliamentary elections that combines the list-based and single-winner systems.

Both Islamist and secular parties prefer the list-based system, which they say will make it more difficult for members of the former regime to win seats in parliament.

The Islamists threatened on Thursday that they would demonstrate in Tahrir Square if the military council insists on its position.

“We will discuss our response with our partners in the Democratic Coalition,” said Mohamed al-Katatny, secretary general of the Freedom and Justice Party, the political arm of the Muslim Brotherhood.

Tarek al-Zomor, spokesman of the Jama'a al-Islamiya group, said it too would coordinate its response with other political forces.

The Salafi-led Asala and Nour parties, together with the Nahda Party, also said they would protest against the military council’s decision.
