Report: Israel ready for prisoner exchange with Egypt

Israel is willing to carry out a carry out a prisoner deal with Egypt, which would swap an Israeli citizen for 60 Egyptians, Israel’s Arabic radio station quoted political sources in Tel Aviv as saying.

Egyptian authorities have not yet made a decision on the proposed deal, according to the Sunday report.

Last week, the Palestinian Ma'an news agency reported that the deal had already been made, citing an Israeli military source who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The sources also said Sinai Bedouins blocked the road leading to the Awja border crossing between Israel and Egypt in protest against the failure to yet implement the deal.

Ouda Tarabin, the Israeli citizen who also has Egyptian nationality, was arrested in Sinai and convicted of spying for Israel in 2001. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison.

The station also reported that three Egyptian prisoners have gone on hunger strike to demand their release. They are receiving medical treatment in a prison facility in Ramla.

The station added that the Egyptian consul, Sameh Nabil, requested permission to visit the prisoners.
