Israel responds to Macron on Palestine recognition

French President Emmanuel Macron announced on Wednesday that his country might recognize the Palestinian state in June.

In response, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar stated that “unilateral recognition of a fictitious Palestinian state by any country is a reward for terrorism and a boost for Hamas.”

Macron said in an interview on France 5 channel, “We must move towards recognition of the Palestinian state, and we will do so in the coming months.”

The French President clarified in his statement that this decision would not be aimed at pleasing any particular party, but because “it would be just.”

Macron affirmed in his remarks that he seeks for France to be part of the “dynamic” supporting this recognition.
