Italy vows to use Qadhafi’s assets to help the Libyan people

Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini told Mostafa Abdel Gelil, president of Libya’s rebel National Transition Council, who was given a presidential reception upon his arrival in Italy, that his government has decided to use the assets and liquidity of Libyan leader Muammar Qadhafi and his family to help the Libyan people.

Dissident Libyan permanent representative to the United Nations, Abdel Rahman Shalqam, estimated Qadhafi’s assets in Italy at 15 to 20 million euros.

“The council will ask the United States to do the same,” he said, adding that Qadhafi has more than US$25 billion in the US.

Shalqam called on Egypt and Tunisia to also repatriate the assets of their deposed leaders.
