Judges demand explanation for increase in registered voters

The Judges for Egypt movement called on the Presidential Elections Commission (PEC) to clarify the recent increase in registered voters, which grew to 4.8 million in the last 14 months.

Just over 45 million voters were eligible to cast ballots in the March 2011 constitutional referendum, a number that grew to more than 50.5 million for the presidential elections last week, the movement said in a statement Monday.

“This increase is hard to believe. The commission and Interior Ministry have to explain this,” the movement said.

Zakareya Abdel Aziz, head of the movement, said the judges submitted a statement to PEC chief Farouk Sultan and the interior minister demanding a clarification of the increase.

Abdel Aziz said an explanation was necessary to preserve the integrity of elections.

The movement, which includes 350 judges and helped monitor polling stations and voting results, plans to compare its registered voter figure to the commission's and disclose the results to the public, he added.

“If we added the number of expatriate voters, which reached 586,390 citizens, the increase in numbers of registered voters in 14 months would be 4,826,382 citizens, which requires an explanation from the commission and the interior ministry,” he said.
