A lawsuit demanding the dissolution of the National Council for Woman (NCW) has been filed against the ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) and Prime Minister Kamal al-Ganzouri.
The plaintiffs say that the NCW was formed by members of the disbanded National Democratic Party and that it is a tool used by the party to achieve nefarious objectives.
The council was headed by Farkhonda Hassan, who was accused by anti-Mubarak feminists of being close to Suzanne Mubarak, the wife of former President Hosni Mubarak. The council in general was accused of promoting the president’s wife and falsely portraying her as an advocate of women’s rights.
The plaintiffs complain that the head of the regime has been removed but that the council, which was headed by his wife, remains.
The council, they say, should be dissolved and replaced with a body that truly represents Egyptian women and seeks to empower them.
