A number of socialist and liberal political parties are working on forming a coalition to counter the rise of religious forces as Egypt heads towards parliamentary elections in September. Parties in the secularist coaltion would run on a unified list in the upcoming elections.
Members of parties considering joining the coalition say that Egypt's leftist parties are immersed in narrow ideological differences that are weakening them, while religious forces are quickly gaining ground.
“The new front aims to defend the secular state,” said Talaat Fahmy, co-founder of the Popular Coalition Party.
For his part, Amin Iskander, from the Karama Party, said the new front would oppose counter-revolutionary forces.
