Libyan Embassy in Cairo says weapons found inside building

The Libyan Embassy in Cairo announced on Monday the discovery of a number of weapons apparently stored in the embassy's building by members of the former Libyan regime.

The embassy released a statement suggesting that the reason for the weapons cache – which included rifles, machine guns and pistols equipped with silencers – was to assassinate opponents of Muammar Qadhafi in Egypt.

The statement said the discovery demonstrates the criminal nature of the former Libyan regime and the way it viewed the sovereignty of the nations in which it operated.

The embassy urged Egyptian authorities to help find weapons hidden by former Libyan officials in Egypt, especially those who used to work at the embassy.

They should be investigated and the results of any investigations should be passed to the embassy, it said.
