Luxor–Restrictive security measures have been imposed on the Upper Egyptian city of Luxor in advance of a scheduled visit by Gamal Mubarak, head of the ruling National Democratic Party’s influential Policies Secretariat and son of President Hosni Mubarak. Authorities have reportedly stepped up security throughout the city, redirecting the flow of traffic in some areas.
Luxor has also undergone an intensive clean-up campaign ahead of the visit–including the painting of pavements and lampposts–from the Airport Road to the village of Toud, where Gamal Mubarak is scheduled to meet with a number of local young people.
A large number of police officers have been deployed on the streets and traffic was brought to a halt one hour before the presidential scion’s arrival. Schools in neighboring areas dismissed students as early as 10:00 AM.
Gamal Mubarak arrived in Luxor Wednesday afternoon, where he met with a number of provincial ruling party leaders and young members. He inspected work on several government initiatives, including a project devoted to school development and the the ongoing renovation of the ancient Avenue of Sphinxes.
