Main defendant in Thanaweya Amma exam leaks case sentenced to life in prison

Cairo Criminal Court sentenced a defendant to life in prison on Wednesday, on charges of leaking Thanaweya Amma (high school) exams.

The other two defendants were sentenced to three years in prison. Five defendants were handed suspended jail sentences.

The top prosecutor referred eight defendants to a criminal court in December 2016, for Thanaweya Amma exam leaks between 2014 and 2016.

The main defendant Atef Mohamed, who was handed a life sentence, was the head of the General Administration of Examinations with the Education Ministry, the second defendant, his wife, was charged with a three-year sentence, and the third defendant, her sister was handed a three-year suspended sentence.

According to investigations, Mohamed requested from LE 5,000 from his sister-in-law, in 2014, in exchange of leaking of all the literary branch exams and its model answers.

He also requested LE 10,000 from the forth defendant, who was handed a suspended jail sentence, in return for leaking of a copy of the exam papers of the English and Italian languages’ courses, and Math. The forth defendant needed a copy of the exams for her son who was in Thanaweya Amma in 2014.

Mohamed’s wife was a mediator in 2015 and 2016 between her husband and the fifth defendant, who was handed a suspended jail sentence. Mohamed took bribes from the fifth defendant both years in return for the leakage of Thanaweya Amma exams in Arabic, English, Chmistry, Religion, Physics, Maths, and Italian courses.

The defendants were accused of requesting bribes in return for the leakage of Thanaweya Amma exams between 2014 and 2015, facilitating and mediating the exam leaks and giving bribes to the main defendant in return for the crime.
