Police shot dead a 36-year old man after he opened fire in Giza’s Awsim district, killing five people and injuring two police officers according to a statement by the Interior Ministry.
The exact motive behind the killing is still under investigation. Police installed a security cordon around the incident’s location and began listening to witnesses at the scene.
Some civilians present at the scene told al-Shorouk newspaper that a family dispute was possibly behind the shooting, adding that the perpetrator was a known drug addict.
The shooter’s wife and parents are believed to be among the victims, according to the witnesses.
They eyewitnesses told al-Shorouk that the man had suddenly began shooting out into the street, adding that they feared the death toll might be more than five victims.
