Mansour raises president’s salary to LE42,000 per month

Interim President Adly Mansour on Sunday amended the first paragraph of Law No. 99 for the year 1987 regarding the president’s salary and allowances. He decreed an LE21,000 per month as a salary and another LE21,000 per month as an allowance.

The old article had determined LE12,000 per month as a salary and LE12,00 per month as an allowance.

The 2014 Constitution says the president’s salary is determined by law and cannot be changed during his term.

The rationale of the decree says the amendment took into consideration the inflation rate and other economic fluctuations that have occurred since 1987 and that changed the salaries of other public officials, except the president.

Also put into consideration was the new law that says public servants are allowed no more than 35 times the minimum salary received in their respective government institution, including allowances and incentives.

Presidential spokesperson Ihab Badawi said the decree is not retroactive.

It is noteworthy to mention that Mansour has not received a salary other than that of the Supreme Constitutional Court.
