MB demands discussion of rights council report

Members of the Muslim Brotherhood (MB)’s parliamentary bloc have asked Parliamentary Speaker Fathi Sorour to add the Egyptian Human Rights Council (EHRC)’s 6th annual report to the agenda of next Saturday’s meeting.

"Parliament never discusses the council’s reports, which means it regards them as insignificant," said MB bloc deputy Hussein Ibrahim, contending that the EHRC’s 6th annual report revealed numerous human rights violations on the part of the government.

"The report states that the government arrested activists without any justification and charged them with threatening public order," he added.

MB deputies drew attention to one section of the report in particular, which noted that international and local human rights groups considered violations by the Egyptian government to be "systematic."
