On Wednesday, Cairo Criminal Court sentenced 18 Muslim Brotherhood members to prison for involvement in riots that took place in the Shubra neighborhood.
The prison sentences ranged from three to seven years.
The public prosecutor had earlier referred the defendants to court over alleged involvement in thuggery and violence that took place in Shubra in July, following the ouster of former President Mohamed Morsy.
The suspects faced charges of attempted murder, possessing unlicensed weapons, using force and violence. Two of the suspects were accused of assisting the rest to use two vehicles loaded with arms.
The Muslim Brotherhood says that sentences against supporters of Morsy are politically motivated and are meant to silence dissent against the current military-backed government.
The Egyptian government had labeled the MB a terrorist organization earlier this year and has issued a law that requires any protest to receive prior approval from the interior ministry.
