Media professionals reiterate call for civilian presidential council

Egyptian media professionals on Sunday called for the formation of a civilian presidential council to run the country’s affairs during the current interim period.

In a statement, the Maspiro Revolutionaries movement criticized the ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) and accused it of creating the illusion that it is protecting the revolution.

"After closely following the events of the Egyptian revolution for more than six months, we feel the gravity of the crime we committed when, after carrying out our revolution, we handed over its leadership to those who keep us under the illusion that they’re protecting it," the statement said.

As well as a civilian council, it called for a mechanism to outline practical steps to save the revolution.

The Maspiro Revolutionaries movement was launched after the resignation of former president Hosni Mubarak on 11 February.

The movement said its most important objective is purging the audio and visual media of corruption and members of the now-dissolved National Democratic Party. It also called for greater professionalism in the Egyptian media.
