Head of Gharbiya Security Directorate Major General Tarek Hassouna revealed the details of an attack by five masked men carrying machetes against a pharmacist in the Egyptian delta town of Zefta.

A video of the incident went viral on Sunday evening, where five masked men appears violently attacking the pharmacist, who can be seen bleeding from his hand.

In statements to Al-Masry Al-Youm on Monday, Hassouna said that the incident took place four days ago because of a financial dispute between the pharmacy owner Mahmoud al-Azab Abo Bakr and a man who bought an apartment from him.

The buyer allegedly hired thugs to assault Azab, who sustained a three-centimeter long wound in his hand. He has since received treatment at Zefta Public Hospital.

Hassouna added that immediately upon being informed of the attack, he ordered a criminal investigation team to search for the perpetrators.

One of the perpetrators was arrested and confessed to the crime, after which he revealed the whereabouts of the rest of the attackers, who are currently being searched for.

He explained that the men were hired to attack the pharmacist to take revenge on him.

Head of the Egyptian Pharmacists Syndicate, Mohie Eddin Ebeid, said that he is in contact with the Interior Ministry to ensure that the attackers are arrested.

He added that the incident will not go unpunished, stressing that pharmacies represents “a red line”.

Ebeid pointed out that he has spoken to the assaulted pharmacist and that a syndicate delegation has been assigned to follow up on the developments of the incident.

The delegation inspected the pharmacy in order to evaluate the damage and to pay compensation to the victim.
