The Supreme Council of Armed Forces has approved a new draft law to crack down on crimes such as intimidation, thuggery and disturbing the peace. Under the new law, the death penalty may be handed out if criminal acts of thuggery result in murder.
Egypt's cabinet, headed by Prime Minister Essam Sharaf, postponed its meeting on Wednesday at the request of Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi. Sharaf and ten ministers, including the ministers of interior, finance, education, higher education, foreign affairs and military production, met with Tantawi at the Defense Ministry in Manshiyet al-Bakri.
The Supreme Council also approved a draft law that would annex the Investment Authority and the Supply Commodities Authority to the Ministry of Social Solidarity, as well as approving the Capital Markets Authority's implementation of regulations.
Minister of Social Solidarity Gouda Abdel Khalek said Egypt's food stores could supply the country for at least three months. The cabinet is expected to meet again on Wednesday evening.
