Military council circumventing revolution, say presidential hopefuls

Three presidential candidates have criticized the meeting between the ruling military council and political party leaders on Saturday, considering its outcome a “circumvention” of the revolution.

“Agreeing on the Emergency Law was unjustifiable,” said presidential hopeful Mohamed Selim al-Awa, adding that extending the parliamentary elections until March, and holding the presidential elections after the writing of the constitution, which was also agreed during the meeting, would only prolong the transition period.

“I also reject the supra-constitutional principles they agreed upon,” he said.

“They agreed on partial solutions,” said presidential candidate Abdel Moneim Abouel Fotouh. “These would increase the suffering of the people.”

Presidential candidate Hamdeen Sabbahi also rejected the meeting for the same reasons.
