The Military Prosecution plans to investigate the clashes that erupted between police and army officers in New Cairo’s Fifth Settlement police department on Monday, sources at the attorney general’s office said Tuesday.
The sources added that the prosecution would conduct an investigation into the dispute on Saturday between an army officer and a policeman on Cairo-Ismailia road.
The military officer claims that the policeman stopped him to check his driver’s license, then took him to the police station and assaulted him.
About 60 of the army officer’s friends and colleagues gathered on Monday outside the police department. They clashed with the police, who threw teargas canisters to disperse them.
A meeting was held between the leaders of the Armed Forces and the Interior Ministry to resolve the matter amicably.
Military spokesperson Ahmed Mohamed Ali announced Monday night that the clashes between police and army officers were brought under control after Central Military Zone Commander Major Tawhid Tawfiq Abdel Sami and the commanders of the Military Police and the commando forces went to the Fifth Settlement to resolve the situation, with the help of the Interior Ministry.
Ali said the confrontation was “incidental” and that the police and the army are partners in securing the country.
