The Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) said on Sunday that it would not tolerate any attempts to spark sectarian strife. The statements come after clashes between Muslims and Copts in southern Egypt left two people dead.
The statement — which also conveyed Easter greetings to Egyptian Copts — was published on the SCAF’s official Facebook page.
Coptic Pope Shenouda III on Sunday expressed disappointment at the sectarian clashes in the city of Abu Qorqas in Minya last week, as well as the protests in Qena over the appointment of a Christian former police general as governor, a dispute that has acquired sectarian overtones.
Shenouda said that all Egyptians want peace and pointed out that the first days of the 25 January revolution did not witness any sectarian clashes.
