US President Donald Trump asserted on Saturday evening that the US had achieved a decisive military advantage over Iran, noting that minesweepers are removing naval mines in the Strait of Hormuz laid by Iranian forces.
Trump added that the possibility of reaching an agreement with Iran remains open, saying, “Maybe the Iranians will reach an agreement, maybe they won’t,” according to Al Jazeera.
He explained that US forces had “defeated the Iranian navy and destroyed 150 of their ships”, adding that NATO had not participated in these operations.
Trump also addressed the political situation in Iran, stating: “Ali Khamenei ruled Iran for years, and now he is dead.”
Trump concluded his remarks by emphasizing that the US is engaged in “in-depth talks” with Iran, adding, “It makes no difference to me if we reach an agreement with Iran. We are winners either way.”
Iranian television meanwhile reported a third round of talks between the US and Iran in Pakistan that evening, indicating a disagreement over American demands, according to Agence France-Presse.
