Mohamed Amin al-Mahdy, minister of transitional justice and national reconciliation, has called for a constitutional commission to address transitional justice and ensure rights for all social and political groups. “We must look forward, not backwards,” he said.
At a conference titled “The Track of the Constitution” sponsored by the Development Office of the United Nations, Mahdy said the onus is not on the Constitution but on what the Constitution leaves for legislatures, the government and the people. “The Constitution is the backbone of the future. It [the Constitution] is unfortunately not used,” he said.
According to the Constitution, he said the state should be committed to all rights and public freedoms. “The Constitution assigns the parliament with the task of transitional justice,” he said. “I prefer the Constitution to be the source of an integrated system of transitional justice.”
