The implementation of Egypt’s nuclear program is contingent on the approval of the next parliament, Minister of Electricity Ahmed Imam said, adding that once approved, the project will be put up for an international tender.
The minister’s remarks came during a series of meetings held with senior officials at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), headed by its director, Yukia Amano, in Vienna, a statement by the ministry said Wednesday.
During the meetings, Imam reviewed various nuclear activities conducted in Egypt in collaboration with the IAEA, including in agriculture, industry, health and water management.
Imam noted that Egypt had announced in October 2007 the launching of a program to install four nuclear units for electricity generation based on international safety standards. He added that procedures necessary for meeting infrastructure, legislative and organizational grounds for nuclear activity had been finished.
