Health Minister Adel al-Adawy has announced that providing valid blood should top the government’s priorities in order to guarantee citizens' rights to receive high quality medical care.
In his speech during the World Blood Donor Day's ‘Thanks for saving my life’ event held at the Arab League's headquarters on Sunday, Adawy said the ministry took the initiative to establish a national authority for blood transfusion services in 1997, so that it may be a national entity that organizes and develops all blood transfusion services.
The minister added that the rate of regular blood donors is currently at 1 percent of the population, adding that at least 3 percent of the population is required to donate blood regularly to guarantee enough blood.
World Blood Donor Day is celebrated annually on June 14.
